The concept proposed by Vannevar Bush in “As We May Think” (1945) — a personal device for storing and retrieving one’s entire body of knowledge, linked via “associative trails” that mirror how the human mind actually works.

Core Idea

Bush observed that human thought is associative — we jump from concept to concept through association, not through hierarchical indexing. Memex was designed to:

  • Store all personal books, records, and communications
  • Let users create “trails” between documents
  • Share trails with others

Relationship to the LLM Wiki Pattern

LLM Wiki Pattern is the modern realization of the Memex vision. Both are private, actively curated knowledge stores where connections between documents are a first-class feature.

The problem Bush couldn’t solve: Who does the maintenance? Who creates the trails? The LLM Wiki’s answer: The LLM does all of it.

Bush saw the value of associative linking but had no tool to do the bookkeeping automatically. The LLM is the missing piece.

Historical Impact

The Memex is widely considered the conceptual ancestor of hypertext and the World Wide Web. However, the web became public and chaotic rather than the private, curated personal knowledge device Bush envisioned. The LLM Wiki pattern is closer to Bush’s original vision.
